"HD" covers a wider range than people assume — 720p is HD, 1080p is Full HD, and the jump between them matters a lot less than most people expect once you factor in screen size and viewing distance. This page is specifically about that 720p/1080p decision, because it's the one most people actually need to make, more often than the 4K question.

720p vs. 1080p: The Difference That Actually Matters

Resolution only matters relative to screen size and how far you're sitting from it. On a phone or small tablet, 720p and 1080p are visually indistinguishable — you're not resolving the extra pixels at that viewing distance, so downloading 1080p there just costs you more storage for no visible gain. On a laptop screen or a TV, 1080p becomes noticeably sharper, especially on scenes with fine text or detail. The rule of thumb: if the screen is under 10 inches, 720p is the efficient choice; above that, 1080p earns its file size.

Why 1080p Downloads Take Longer

YouTube only serves 720p and above as separate video-only and audio-only streams (a format called DASH), unlike some 480p and below "progressive" streams that already bundle both. That means every 720p or 1080p download requires a server-side merge step — iDownloadd fetches both streams and combines them with FFmpeg before handing you the finished MP4. It's a few extra seconds of processing, but it's what lets HD downloads exist at all; YouTube stopped offering combined progressive streams above 720p years ago.

Downloading in HD

Paste the link above, click Fetch Info, and pick 720p or 1080p from the quality dropdown before hitting Convert & Download. If the source video was never uploaded above 720p, 1080p simply won't appear as an option — YouTube can't serve a resolution the uploader never provided.

Resolution Pixels Sharpest On
720p (HD) 1280 × 720 Phones, tablets, small monitors
1080p (Full HD) 1920 × 1080 Laptops, desktop monitors, TVs
From Usman, the developer: I originally defaulted the quality dropdown to 1080p for every video. It turned out most people converting content for phone viewing didn't bother changing it, and were downloading files twice the size of what they needed. Now the dropdown defaults to 720p with a note that 1080p is available — a small UI change, but it cut average download size noticeably without anyone losing quality they'd actually notice.

When to Go Further Than 1080p

If you're archiving for a large TV or projector, or the source has real 4K detail worth keeping, see our 4K downloader guide — it also covers why some videos cap out at 1080p even when you'd expect higher. For the underlying codec question (why the file plays everywhere), see our main YouTube to MP4 guide.
